Icarus Psychotherapy Services of New York

"The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are."
Carl  Jung

Therapy Centered on You and Your Needs

Icarus didn't fall because he was careless — he fell because, for one exhilarating moment, he was fully alive. He was warned, he understood, he meant to heed it — and still, the sky won. That's not a story about hubris. It's a story about what happens where desire meets limitation, where freedom meets consequence — the exact terrain of being human. Icarus Psychotherapy is named for the people who've been there: who flew, who fell, who landed somewhere they never intended. This is a practice for those with the courage to look at that terrain honestly, and decide who to become next.

FREEDOM & RESPONSIBILITY

We are always choosing - even the choice not to choose is a choice. Existential therapy helps you recognize your freedom and embrace the responsibility that accompanies it.

MEANING & PURPOSE

Viktor Frankl taught us that meaning can be found even in the midst of suffering. Therapy explores what gives your life depth, direction, and purpose - and what stands in its way.

AUTHENTICITY & COURAGET

To live authentically is to live honestly to acknowledge who you are, who you have been, and who you wish to become. This takes courage, and it is the heart of the work we do together.

What is Existential Therapy?

A return to the questions that matter most. Existential therapy draws on the rich traditions of philosophy and phenomenology to help individuals confront the deepest questions of human life. Rather than viewing distress as pathology to be eliminated, it understands suffering as often rooted in our relationship with existence itself with freedom, mortality, meaning, and connection.

In this work, we do not merely manage symptoms. We examine the conditions that give rise to them.

We ask:

  • Am I able to be in this world? Do I feel safe enough to truly exist?

  • What moves me? What brings me warmth and joy? Is life good for me? Do I like to be?

  • Is there space for me to be myself? Am I seen, valued, and met with justice?

  • What truly matters to me? Do I sense that my life means something to me? Am I able to transcend the darkness?

This is a therapy of genuine encounter: honest, rigorous, and deeply humane.

About Me

I came to psychotherapy through philosophy - drawn by the same questions that have occupied thinkers for centuries: What does it mean to live well? How do we find meaning in the face of uncertainty, loss, and our own finitude?

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a PhD in philosophy and a Certification in Existential Analysis from the University of Vienna, and I bring all of that formation into the room with each person I work with.

My practice is grounded in the belief that genuine therapeutic presence - the kind that neither rushes toward solutions nor retreats from hard truths - is itself a form of care. I work with people who are ready to take their own inner life seriously, and I meet them there with curiosity, rigor, and warmth.

What Our Clients Are Saying

S.H.

Pam is an excellent therapist. She brings an extensive knowledge of both traditional CBT and history/philosophy to every session, creating opportunities for introspection informed by the bigger picture. She has always made me feel incredibly safe to share my story and I look forward to speaking with her every week. Her insight has hugely helped me to understand the root source of my emotions and behavioral tendencies, which has allowed me to walk through the world through a more empowered, confident, and empathetic towards others.

A.G.

Pamela is an incredible therapist kind, compassionate, and deeply understanding. Her support throughout my divorce journey was invaluable. She brings a thoughtful and intentional presence to every session, and I always felt truly seen and heard. It's clear that she is trauma-informed and genuinely committed to providing a safe, supportive space for healing.

C.P.

I was shocked at this place. Almost backed out and left because I didn't think I was in the right place XD. Dr. Ryan was fantastic and so welcoming, her office is so cozy and has a "home away from home" feeling. I still can't believe how much progress I've made and I've only just started.
